Ninjago: Am I Like Them?

It was late into December when Kai decided to take Mina shopping. The duo were bundled up tight with coats, gloves, and hats, but could still feel the harsh winter coldness under it all. Kai also found out that Mina wasn't much of a shopper... at least, not yet any way. Instead, Mina kept her head down as she walked along the multitude of stores they went past, not even caring to look up.
“What's going through your head kid?” Kai finally decided to ask. Mina shrugged.
“Something's going on in there,” Kai told her, playfully pushing her a bit, “Zane does the same thing when he's thinking of something big.”
“Zane's a robot.” Mina said, a tone in her voice made Kai flinch a little. The truth had come out to Mina during her birthday; Zane was a Nindroid and not at all human. Generally, she did accept it for what is was, but she still couldn't completely understand. Not that Kai could blame her, Zane had once had issues digesting that he wasn't human either. Not that they haven't told her that, it was just something she had to accept herself.
“Besides that,” Kai told her, “What else is on your mind?”
For awhile she was silent. But she opened up after looking at a store window.
“Did you know my parents?” she finally asked. Kai looked at the same window store display Mina was. The display was simple, considering it was for a well known jewelry company. In short, it was a male mannequin giving a female mannequin a beautifully boxed ring. Of the many times Kai felt sorry for Mina's lack of parents, and the deaths of her grandparents, this one absolutely took the cake.
“I helped train....” Kai started to say, then scratched the idea. “Your father and I were very close. He was like a brother to me, and since I knew him since he was a kid, there wasn't much of a surprise there.”
“What about my mom?” the girl asked.
“I didn't know her as well.” Kai admitted. Mina sighed sadly, which made Kai continue, “But I heard she was a firecracker with a temper worse than mine.”
Mina made a face at this.
“Do I act like any of them?”
Kai had to think about it for a bit.
“You are stubborn, like your mother.” he started to say, “But you are persistent and do all you can not to hurt someone like your father.”
Mina thought about this for a little, then smiled a bit. But then she thought of something else that made her frown again.
“Did my parents love each other?” she asked.
“I can't tell you that.” Kai told her. “I really didn't know they had... I can't say that around you yet. Let's just say, when you showed up to me, I was genuinely surprised.”
Mina made a face that Kai didn't recognize and said nothing. Finally, Mina said something.
“Do... do you think that they'd be... proud of me?”
Kai's heart nearly broke.
“I... can't answer that.” he told her. “But I know what I can answer for you.”
“What?” she asked, looking at him.
“I'm proud of you kid.” Kai said, putting his arm around her neck. “Zane is too. Never doubt it for anything, got it? We're your family, whether you take that into consideration or not. We love you, and nothing in Ninjago is gonna change that. Got it through your head yet?”
Mina smiled and gave Kai a hug.
“Thank you.” she said gratefully.
“Let's get back home.” Kai told her. “I think Zane is going to make Ninjago nutmeg pie.”
Mina smiled.
“I like Zane's cooking.” she said.
“So did your dad.” Kai agreed, as they started to walk home.
